WPS in the UAE: a plain-English guide for employers
What the Wage Protection System actually asks of you, what a SIF file is, and how to stop batches bouncing back.
If your company is registered with MOHRE, paying salaries through the Wage Protection System (WPS) is a legal requirement, not a choice. This guide walks through what that means in practice.
What WPS is
WPS is the electronic channel that private-sector salaries must travel through in the UAE. It is supervised by MOHRE and the UAE Central Bank, and it exists so there is a verifiable record that employees were paid the right amount, on time.
The SIF file
Each pay cycle you submit a Salary Information File (SIF) to your WPS agent — your bank or an authorised exchange house. It contains your establishment details, including the MOL ID, and a line per employee with their labour card number, IBAN and salary breakdown.
Avoiding rejections
The most common causes of a bounced batch are a mistyped IBAN, a stale MOL ID, or salary totals that do not reconcile. Validating those fields before submission is the single most useful thing payroll software can do.
